National Innovation Initiatives

Innovation involves thinking differently, creatively and insightfully to create solutions that have an impact in terms of social and economic value.

National Innovation Council (NInC) setup under the Chairmanship of Mr. Sam Pitroda, Adviser to the PM on PIII to discuss, to analyse and help implement strategies for inclusive innovation in India and prepare a Roadmap for Innovation 2010-2020. NInC would be the first step in creating a crosscutting system which will provide mutually reinforcing policies, recommendations and methodologies to implement and boost innovation performance in the country.

This book highlights some of the key initiatives that NInC has taken in last four years to promote innovations in the country.

Public Information Infrastructure and Innovations

India's inclusive growth agenda and its global competitiveness in the new knowledge paradigm will increasingly depend on its ability to provide its citizens access to information and quality public services in key areas such as education, health and governance.

To realise this, the country would need a systemic shift towards a comprehensive Public Information Infrastrcture and a roadmap for innovation geared towards meeting the challenges of the 21st century. These activities will have a revolutionary impact on governance reform and inclusive growth in the country. Towards this end, the Office of Adviser to the Prime Minister will undertake the following tasks:

1Operationalising the National Knowledge Network to interconnect all educational and research institutions

2Overseeing broadband connectivity to Panchayats and enabling citizen interface to improve delivery of public services and citizen empowerment

3Promoting greater use of Information Communications Technology in Public Transport Systems

4Promoting greater use of Information Communications Technology in the Justice System

5Developing an Action Plan for a Decade of Innovation
